Research and Engineering Institute (R&EI) which is the scientific and engineering division of Vietsovpetro JV (VSP) has been awarded the Vietnamese Order of Labor. R&EI was established for research purposes and conducts scientific, economic and technical studies in the fields of prospecting, drilling, development, construction and the operation of oil and gas facilities for VSP. This research develops technological and design alternatives for all stages of construction, rebuilding and major repair of VSP facilities.
The Research and Exploration workshop created in 1982, was the prototype for R&EI and comprised only a small group of employees, mainly geologist and geologist and geophysicist. The primary objective during that period wax exploration work in the exploration for commercial oil and gas deposits. The work was focused on conducting seismic surveys and the analysis of geological objectives, and drilling on the continental shelf in the south of Vietnam.
The discovery of the Bach Ho (White Tiger) field was a tremendous success for the team. Their analyses of the first reservoir-evaluating wells had a major impact on the oilfield development and necessitated he creation of an expanded research division, which would specialize in developing and executing projects of oil and gas field development.
R&EI was officially established on October 26, 1985. The history of R&EI is closely connected with VSP development and can be divided into several periods: 1986-1990; 1990-1996; 1996-2000, and from year 2000 till present time.

1985-1990. The Period of creation of R&EI.

During this time, the R&EI consisted of two parts: a scientific and engineering part. Bach Ho oilfield commenced production in 1986, producing oil from the Lower Miocene clastic reservoir. Later, an ail was discovered in the granitic basement production on 1988. During this period R&EI developed a design for the offshore facility construction with the assistance of such research institutions of former USSR as NIPImornefiegas and VNIINEFT.
In July 1989 R&EI put together their first scientific documentation on the “Technical and Economic Assessment of the Construction of Offshore Field Facilities in the southern part of Bach Ho Oilfield”. In 1990 a report on the “Commercial Production Testing of the Basement Oil Pool in the Central Part of the Bach Ho Oilfield” was also written.

1990-1996. The Completion of the Organizational Mechanisms and Introduction of New Techniques.

During this period R&EI achieved the status of a leading research and design institution in the petroleum industry, Initially a number of leading specialists who had specific qualification and experience, were assigned to VSP specialized departments. New information technologies were introduced to R&EI and all department were equipped with computers. These advances allowed experts to simulate field development and build reservoir 3-D geological models, as well as processing geophysical data. A number of strategic projects of field development operations were carried out : namely, “ The Bach Ho Field Development and Offshore Facility Construction Plan in the southern part of Vietnamese continental shelf “ in 1992; and “ The Addendum to Bach Ho Field Development and Offshore Facility Construction Plan in the southern part of Vietnamese continental shelf “, in 1993.

1996-2000. Raising the Quality of Employee Professional Development.

In this period Vietnamese specialists had accumulated sufficient knowledge and experience to hold executive positions in the organization. In 1996, a Vietnamese specialist was appointed the Director of Research and Head of Oilfield Development Department were taken over by the Vietnamese specialists.

Period 2000 – till present: Broadening the scope of Activities.

R&EI is constantly broadening the scope of its work beyond Vietsovpetro. More and more specialists of R&EI are participating as consultants and experts in tender evaluation processes ass members of PetroVietnam Corporation. They also participate as experts in many other oil and gas projects. R&EI was appointed as major contractor for such big projects as Rang Dong-Bach Ho pipeline, and PM-3 Ca Mau project.
